ABOUT
THE ISLAND OF ISCHIA Ischia
is the biggest island in the gulf of Naples; its nick-name is: “the green
island” due to the thick
vegetation growing and the particular kind of “green-tufa rock”. The island
has volcanic origins and the highest mountain is named Mount Epomeo, a death
volcano. The volcanic activity has developed so many thermal springs, such to
make the island being considered the most important in Europe for its 103
thermal springs, 69 gaisers and 29 thermal spas. The island is politically dived
in six municipalities, which: Ischia Porto, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno,
Forio, Serrara-Fontana and Barano d’Ischia; all enchanting and rich of history
and natural beauties. 37 kilometres
of coast with bays, sea caves with colourful rocks shaped by the sea, are
waiting to be explored. The real richness of the island are food and wine; where
a millenary tradition brought the wine of Ischia to be considered one of the
best in the world (Biancolella, Forastera and Per’e Palummo). The typical
recipe of Ischia is rabbit, grown in wide holes dug in the ground; although are
grown sheeps and hogs too. The
volcanic soil rich of minerals and the abundant sun provides tasty vegetables to
the islanders, such as: egg-plants, zucchini, potatoes, artichokes, rucola,
pepperoni, and tomatoes which are typically kept in clusters and hanged under
the porch of each house. Along the coast is possible to admire the hard job of
fishermens catching: sea bass, sargo, calamari, shrimps, lobster, etc. which
enriches the menus of restaurants.
